It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved grandfather, Alvah DeYoung. Gramp, as I affectionately called him, was more than just a grandfather to me – he was my rock, my mentor, and my hero.
Growing up, my family faced numerous challenges. My mom struggled with drug and alcohol issues, leaving my brother and me in a precarious situation. That’s when Gramp stepped in, selflessly taking us under his wing and providing us with a stable and loving home.
Gramp’s unwavering dedication to our well-being was a beacon of hope during a tumultuous time. He showed us what it meant to put family first, teaching us the value of hard work, discipline, and compassion. Under his guidance, we went from struggling to make ends meet to having everything we needed and more.
As I reflect on Gramp’s remarkable life, I’m reminded of the profound impact he had on mine and my brother’s life. Despite the challenges he faced, including his brave battle with dementia, Gramp remained a pillar of strength and wisdom.
Though dementia may have taken his memories, it will never erase the indelible mark he left on our lives. We wouldn’t be the men we are today without him. As I bid farewell to my beloved Gramp, I take comfort in knowing that he’s finally at peace.
Rest in peace, Gramp. Your legacy will live on through the countless lives you touched, including mine.
